Dade City Florida

Beautiful & historic

Welcome to Dade City

Dade City offers quintessential small town living and after taking a day to explore, you may fall in love and want to call it home. The historic downtown district is dotted with quaint storefronts where you’ll find friendly, welcoming merchants and an intriguing mix of wares.

Come hungry! Dade City is home to some locally famous eateries! Everyone loves Olga’s Bakery and Deli, a landmark and favorite sweet spot since 1972. Olga’s breadsticks slathered with frosting are divine, but aren’t to be outdone by the variety of baked goods and deli sandwiches available (the pressed breakfast sandwiches on fresh Cuban bread - yum!). Mexican at Del Carmen is as authentic as you can ask for.  Walk into Kokopelli’s and prepare to be intrigued! The eclectic décor is as fantastic as the menu, and the bar is a great place to enjoy a handcrafted cocktail. Another favorite hometown eatery is the Green Door on 8th where Sunday brunch is amazing!

Those who call Dade City home love it for many reasons. It’s convenient to Tampa but has a completely different pace and landscape. Just outside of the downtown area, homes become more spread out and neighborhoods give way to rolling green pastures with majestic oaks, home to cattle, horses, alpacas and even the occasional emu.  This area is popular with tourists for its antique stores, restaurants and historic architecture including the Pasco County Courthouse, Hugh Embry Library, and Edwinola. The annual Kumquat Festival is hosted downtown, and the surrounding area is a large producer of the tart kumquat, a citrus fruit eaten whole.

Nature enthusiasts enjoy the serenity and wildness of the Withlacoochee River County Park, a beautiful hiking/biking spot with an observation tower, nice restrooms and picnic areas, and a canoe/kayak launch for river tripping. Not wild enough? Then check out the Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve, home to a great variety of Florida wildlife. The entire area surrounding Dade City is awesome for bird watching. Birds of prey are thriving here including majestic bald eagles, hawks, owls and the gracefully acrobatic swallowtail kites.

If you need more shopping or dining than what downtown offers, you can take a short ride to neighboring towns, San Antonio, Wesley Chapel or Zephyrhills.

History

Dade City is a quaint city and the county seat of Pasco County, Florida, United States located in the rolling hills of eastern part of the county in the Tampa Bay Area.

In the 1870s there was a small community known as Fort Dade but the when the rail system came to the area, the businessmen of the area moved east to be near the railroad and called the town Dade City. Originally the City was incorporated in 813-716-4498 - whether lost or forgotten, the city was reincorporated in 1889 and is the county seat of Pasco County.  Historically, it has been known for its citrus and cattle production; but as the city has grown and undergone a community redevelopment effort, it has become a vibrant area of service, government, and retail industry.

There are several historical sites within Dade City, here are few not to miss:

The Pioneer Florida Museum showcases the life of pioneers in all of central Florida including a home built before the American Civil War.

The Hugh Embry Library on 4th Street was started in 1904.  It has been relocated several times and underwent a complete renovation in the late 1980’s.

Pyracantha Park Civic Center was home to a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II.  The prisoners were German soldiers captured in North Africa.  The prisoner’s helped to create limestone bricks and build warehouses.

Beyond the Kumquat Festival, the city has many popular community-oriented events including the famous Church Street Christmas and the Country Christmas Stroll.  Other events include the monthly “Classic Car Cruise-in”.
